Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2020

Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne.

In a 41 hectare estate, there is only 1 hectare of white varieties: Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne in roughly equal proportions. The Grenache and Clairette is pressed directly into tank upon reaching the cellar where it is fermented and aged on its lees. The Roussanne is harvested in several passes and pressed into French oak for fermentation and aging. The final wine is blended and bottled in the spring after the harvest.

Review:

One of the appellation’s top whites comes from Clos Saint Jean (although it’s their reds that get all the attention), the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc is brilliant, with a fresh, vibrant, focused style to go with classic crushed citrus, tart quince, and acacia flower-like notes. It builds on the palate and is medium-bodied, with richness and depth. Drink it over the coming 10-15 years.

Jean Reverdy Sancerre Blanc 2022

Jean Reverdy Sancerre Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Single vineyard. Vinification: cold fermentation in stainless steel tank, no oak, no malolactic fermentation.

Sweet, fruity and clean. White flowers (acacia, jasmine) and citrus fruits aromas. Perfectly balanced.

A delicious wine, perfect with fish dishes, especially salmon, and a local goat cheese Crottin de Chavignol.

Le Roi des Pierres les Monts Damnes Sancerre Blanc 2021

Super-concentrated and mineral. Release always trails the regular Sancerre Blanc by a year so it has extra time in both tank and bottle.

An understated charm on the nose, revealing elegant aromas of yellow fruits like apricot and mirabelle plum, along with hints of anise and marzipan. A touch of green pepper adds a light and airy quality. On the palate, it offers a crisp and delightful experience, with flavors of plum and orange wedge, culminating in a chalky, saline finish.

VINEYARDS: The vineyards are planted in Terroir of Kimmeridgian marls (calcareous clay with encrustation of oyster and mussel fossils) from the Jurassic time. Trellised vines are averaged around 30 years old and have a planting density of 8000 vines/ha. Tillage takes place in the rows until the bud burst, the rest of the year to natural grass covers. The Côte des Monts Damnés is located in Chavignol. Steep hillsides (declivity up to 70%), facing south, with an altitude that ranges from 650 to 980 feet.

VINTAGE: The grapes matured in cooler temperatures than in recent years, so the 2021 vintage is in line with other vintages that conform to the temperate climate of the Centre-Loire wine region.

VINIFICATION AND MATURATION: The grapes were handpicked and had a light cold static settling to eliminate the coarsest lees. Fermentation and aging took place in stainless steel tanks (88%) and 10 years old wooden vats (12%). After, the wine was aged on fine fermentation lees for 9 months.

Lismore Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Lismore Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc is made from 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc.

As with all Lismore wines, balance is the key. The bracing acidity that is customary in new world Sauvignons has been brought into balance with a carefully chosen pick date and the barrel and egg fermentation and maturation. A full bodied, balanced wine was the goal.

Barrel fermentation and extended lees contact contribute to this full bodied, elegant and well balanced wine. Floral notes of passion flower and fynbos, granadilla, guava, gooseberry and pear on the palate along with an underlying minerality which gives this unique terroir driven wine its signature.

Wine Made in the Soil

The grapes come from 50% Lismore’s Greyton vineyards which are planted on East/Southeast facing slopes at 320 meters in the foothills of the Sonderend Mountain Range. The soils are deep decomposed shale. The other 50% comes from a vineyard in Stanford which overlooks Walker Bay on sandstone soils.

Reviews:

"The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Fermented was from donated Stellenbosch, Helderberg, Elgin fruit and a little from Greyton (thus WO Western Cape). This was made in a similar style, oxidatively in barrels, at Almenkerk but obviously has a very different terroir expression than the usual Cape South Coast fruit. The fresh, saline, sea-spray-scented bouquet gradually unfurls with aeration in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a grassy, white asparagus and ginger-tinged opening, crisp acidity and a racy but composed finish where you would be hard pressed to detect the barrel ferment, it is so discreet. Superb. - Neal Martin"

"Made with a combination of 30% Greyton grapes and parcels donated by friends and colleagues after the fire at Lismore in 2019, this Western Cape Sauvignon Blanc has subtle wood top notes, taut, herbal grapefruit and wet stone flavours and a nip of skin tannins. 2021-24"

Product Description

Stephane Marchand Sancerre Blanc is made from Sauvignon Blanc.

The wine is a blend of the following Sancerre terroirs: 50% Caillotttes, 40% Terres Blanches and 10% Silex.
The grapes are coming from parcels located in Amigny, a hamlet just South of Chavignol. Light gold in color, the complexity and balance of this round and ample wine are linked to the mosaic of Sancerre terroirs that bring a fresh, lively and fruity character, richness, power, and typical minerality. Medium acidity and freshness bring out attractive peach and citrus fruits.

Pair nicely with fresh goat cheeses, oysters with lemon, grilled lemon chicken breasts and Mexican dishes. Serve these whites at 46 °F (8 °C).

Winery: Fleuriet et Fils

Brothers Mathieu and Benoit Fleuriet have been growing vines at the Domaine since 1991. The estate is located in the hamlet of Vauvise, part of the town of Menetou Ratel. They farm 35 different parcels of around 25 hectares of vineyards (61.7 acres). The closest parcel is located 1 kilometer away from the Winery, while the farthest parcel is 8 kilometers away. The vineyards are planted on very distinctive soils: 50% Caillotes, 40% Terres Blanches and 10% Silex.

Fayolle Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Cuvee Nicolas 2018

Fayolle Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Cuvee Nicolas is made from 100 percent Syrah.

Deep ruby red color. Nose of red and black currant fruits, pepper, spring flowers, new leather and mineral/earthy nuances. Medium bodied palate of red fruit and spice. Nice balance. Long finish and velvety.

Review:

"Boasting even more striking aromas of blueberries, violets and peppery spice than the La Rochette bottling, the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage La Cuvee Nicolas is almost Côte-Rôtie-like. Medium to full-bodied without seeming at all heavy, ripe without being overdone, silky and fine from start to finish, it's a real beauty and a testament to the potential of the commune of Gervans - a small granitic outpost within the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. - Joe Czerwinski"
