Gessinger Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese is a late harvest wine produced from grapes picked around 7 days after regular harvest time. The wine is rich, intense, full flavored. Pear, honeysuckle, apple and great acidity that make it a balanced and elegant wine.

Timeless Notes:
Let's have a quick recall of German Riesling labeling. There are four main tiers of sweetness that I usually stick too. There are others, but I find these four to be the most enjoyable: The Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, & of course, the famed Trockenbeerenauslese.
Today, we are talking about a semi-sweet to sweet which is the Spatlese from the Gessinger family estate. It comes from a fully ripe grape and is the lightest of the late harvest Rieslings. These wines drink very young or within a few years of age. In this case, the wine is on the sweet side, and I have to admit I am not one that usually reaches for the sweeter wines. This one, however, is nearly impossible to put down after trying.
The majority of Rieslings worth mentioning are grown along the Mosel river. The bank of the Mosel is made up of different types of blue or red slate. The soil type we are dealing with today is the best of the best, Devonian slate. This very porous slate combined with the clay soil give the wines grown in the region a fine mineral taste as well as excellent balance.
The Gessinger family moved from Italy to the Mosel region of Zelting in the 1500's. In 1680 their winery was founded and in 1820 they became one of the first family owned vineyards in the middle Mosel. In 1899, they joined an exclusive group of winery owners dedicated to the Mosel called, "The Bernkastel Ring". They have been members of this elite group for over 100 years. The Ring is composed of the finest producers in Germany which sell to connoisseurs all over the world. Because of the Ring's reputation, for years Gessinger's wines were only sold at their September auction. This made it impossible for anyone outside of the "click" to get a hold of these top Rieslings.
I spent a week in Bernkastel, a small hamlet in the middle Mosel, a true story book town. Each morning looking out over the town, I would almost expect to see medieval peasants totting their grapes down from the river banks. On my final day, I had a chance to catch up with the Gessinger family. We tasted their fabulous wines in a small underground tavern. Even with the smoke spilling out of the flu from the chimney, I was still able to smell the aroma of apricot, pear, and some granny apples rising from the glass. The wine is well balanced, rich, flavored and intense. It has good acidity to help balance out the late harvest grapes. Elegant and food friendly.
This is a wine I would use to start a meal off and it works just as well to finish one up. It will drink well for the next few years... no rush in consuming this one.
With only 2000 cases produced total, this includes their Spatlese and Auslese, there is not much to go around!

Chavy-Chouet Meursault Les Casse Tetes is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
A "casse tête" in French is a conundrum or puzzle and the name of this plot refers to the hardness of the soil and the challenge it was for our ancestors to plant vines on this pebbly limestone ground.

Tasting notes: Concentrated, powerful, and lively, Les Casse-Têtes is the very quintessence of the Meursault appellation. Its sophistication, structure, and assured elegance reflect the character of the soil.
The 2018 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes comes from vines on rocky soils, less decomposed than other climats, where Romaric Chavy explained it is crucial to pick at exactly the right time. This has an intense bouquet of crushed stone, orange peel and light oyster shell aromas. The palate is taut and fresh on the entry, delivering a fine bead of acidity and tangerine and light mango notes, and spicier than the Les Narvaux, with a little more cohesion on the persistent finish. This is superb.

Chavy-Chouet Meursault Les Vireuils is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
The "Les Vireuils" parcel is located on the top of the hill above Meursault, right below the forest.
It is slightly cooler parcel with a limestone soils with a higher presence of rocks. The wines coming from this parcel are always sharp with a vibrant acidity and a lot of freshness.

he 2018 Meursault Les Vireuils comes from two parcels of vine on either side of the climat (15- and 50-year-old vines). One is a new parcel bought by Chavy (unbelievably, it was advertised on a website that Romaric Chavy happened to see; the transaction was done in a couple of weeks). It has a lovely nose of menthol-tinged citrus fruit that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with well-judged acidity, vivid orange zest and citrus notes and a precise, mineral-driven finish. This is a superb Les Vireuils.

The Zeltinger Schlossberg region is known for its fine weathering Devonian slate and extreme steep slopes. The wine offers a pure and bright bouquet of apricot, peach, litchi, ripe fruit aromas. Elegance and complexity on the palate, long flavors, well-balanced, rich and mineral.

The Weingut Albert Gessinger Estate
The Gessinger family migrated from Northern Italy in the late 1500’s and settled in the middle Mosel region of Zelting, where they worked as artistic masons on churches being constructed in the area. Quickly, they found themselves drawn to viticulture, the prime occupation of the region since Roman times and before. Weingut Albert Gessinger was founded in 1680. In 1820, Peter Gessinger, through marriage, acquired additional vineyards in Zeltingen and Gessinger became one of the first family owned companies in the middle Mosel dedicated exclusively to viticulture. In the 1890s, Weingut Gessinger joined the first organization dedicated to supporting quality wine production in Germany, the Union of Winery Owners of Koblenz. In 1899, Weingut Gessinger joined the Bernkastel Ring, an exclusive group to which they have belonged for over 100 years. The members of the Ring, the finest producers in Germany, sell select wines to connoisseurs from around the world. Today, Alfred Gessinger owns the property and continues the family tradition of wine making going back centuries.
The Weingut Albert Gessinger Vineyard
The Estate consists of 8 acres or 3.2 hectares. The plantings are broken down as follows: 80% Riesling, 15% Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), 5% Dornfelder (new red wine clone developed in 1956). Betz Family La Serenne Syrah is 100% Syrah
La Serenne is the most reflective of the site/vintage dynamic of our three single-site 2012 Syrahs. Lovers of this wine know that its source, the Boushey Vineyard, is the highest altitude of the three vineyards and is typically the latest harvested. This cool site was accentuated by the cooler season and the results reflect the seriousness of this vineyard and its care.
An extraordinary, nearly impenetrable black purple color leads to a concentrated, inky aromatic impression: smoky black cherry and wild blackberry dominate, but a litany of supporting aromas is already emerging: smoke, violet, mushroom, roasted meat, Chinese 5 spice and minerals. It has a full attack on entry and a big, rich mouthfeel that goes on and on.
2012 is our 13th harvest from this site and these rows. We continue to be impressed with the chameleon nature of this vineyard, in cool years and hot, in heat spikes and cool springs: it provides us with surprises and opportunities at every harvest. While the themes of deep black fruits and pliant structure always surface, the nuance of this vineyard and its care (thank you, Dick Boushey) make it some of the most satisfying fruit we work with every harvest.

Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain is made from 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 8% Syrah.
The 2017 vintage started out with a cool, wet winter, with significantly above average snowfall in eastern Washington. Red Mountain had a 24% increase in rainfall in 2017 over the 10 year average. Going into spring, the cool trend continued. As a result, bud break at Klipsun was behind the historical average and significantly behind the most recent warm vintages of 2013 2016. Bloom was also slightly delayed. Because of the cool weather, set was lighter than usual which translated into significantly less fruit in 2017.
The early part of the summer saw average temperatures followed by above average temperatures in July and August. As a result, he at accumulation was a bit above average for the season, despite the cool start. And because of the smaller than normal yield, harvest began right on schedule, perhaps even a bit early for some of the whites. In the second half of September, when Klipsun traditionally harvests all the reds, the temperatures cooled considerably, which delayed ripening. This allowed for luxurious amounts of hang time without the threat of increased sugar accumulation, stretching harvest into the first week of October. A s a result, all fruit going into the 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon could be picked at perfect sugars levels with great fruit maturity and flavors. Overall, the quality of t he 2017 harvest is as high as the 2016. However, the style is slightly different. The 2017 wine has a firmer structure, more spice & mocha in the nose and will take a few mo re years than the 2016 to reach a perfect balance between fruit and tannin.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 8% Syrah, which immediately emanates with aromas of dark roasted espresso bean, toasted oak, dried tobacco and dusty black fruit tones of cassis, currant and blackberries covered in dark cocoa powder. Full-bodied, generous in complexity and still tight in the mouth, the wine unpacks layers of cedar and vanilla tones with dusty purple flowers and bitter dark chocolate across the mid-palate, giving way to fine-grained tannins that will loosen with time. As the wine sits on the palate, the 100% French oak regimen is on full display for all to see. The wine lingering long and continues to evolve in the mouth, ending with a drying finish that highlights the oak and terroir. It’s still a baby, and I would keep it in the cellar for another few years before popping the cork—this will effortlessly coast for more than a decade. The 2017 vintage marks the second release of this wine, with 6,300 bottles produced. It comes from its namesake vineyard, first planted in 1984 on Red Mountain. I’m keeping my eye on this producer. I’m impressed, and even though the oak may be a bit much at the moment, it's still delicious. - Wine Advocate 94+ Points
