Winery: Martin Hugl

The Martin Hugl Estate
This is a young family-run winery located in the north-east of Austria, in Ketzelsdorf-Poysdorf. The owners Sylvia and Martin Hugl aim to produce fruity, full-bodied wines that are typical of the region and the soils. They make use of the experience of their parents and combine it with their know-how and modern techniques to create high-quality wines. To keep quality high they limit quantity by cutting back, thinning, and green harvesting. A careful handling of the grapes during harvesting is as necessary, along with a cool fermentation in the cellar.
Total production in 2009 was 340,000 liters: 76% white, 24% red (actually no rose and sparkling wine, production - rose is planned for vintage 2010)
For the European market they use only varietal names and offer two types of wines made from Grüner Veltliner: Weinviertel DAC – a regional brand with specially controlled quality and rules for selling it, and Grüner Veltliner classic as a second type of Grüner.
Names of their Grüner Veltliner single vineyards,  and quantities produced:
Zapfersberg: 5,000 liters
Rösselberg: 15,000 liters
Waldberg: 25,000 liters
Unführ: 3,000 liters
Luss: 3,000 liters
Baumfeld: 3,000 liters
Junge Geringen: 10,000 liters
Alte Geringen: 15,000 liters

The Martin Hugl Vineyard
In addition to using the best cellar technologies, they emphasize the work in the vineyards and the soils. Prime south- and south-west-facing hillsides and the loam soil ideally suited for wine growing are the basic conditions for high quality. They own and cultivate 22 hectares of vineyards and cooperate additionally with several partners who are cultivating grapes according to their quality targets. They buy grapes from 25 hectares of vineyards.

Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, accounting for 37% of the country's total vineyard area, about 50,875 acres. Most of these vines are in the large wine region known as Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), along the Danube River, north of Vienna. It also grows in a few other Eastern European countries, such as Slovakia, Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic, but the variety is most closely associated with Austria, where it has been cultivated since Roman times.  Grüner Veltliner is the indigenous variety of Austria.

Review:

"I loved the 2019 Bellissime Rose from the Jaume family, which strikes a good balance between a lighter, Provençal rosé and the richer styled Tavel rosé. Revealing a more medium ruby, almost salmon hue with a great nose of salted melon, light strawberries, and white flowers, it has subtle hint of minerality, medium-bodied richness, a great texture, and a clean, crisp finish. It’s another beautiful effort from this team that can stand on its own yet also shine on the dinner table. Drink it over the coming summer months."

Alleme Getariako Txakolina 2019

Alleme Getariako Txakolina is 100% Hondarribi Zuri

A very fruity, persistent and clean Txakoli. It reminds the white exotic fruits, such as lichy. It has a straw yellow color, without the slightest tone of rust and a faint natural gas pearl crown, due to the grape juice fermentation. In the mouth, it is greasy and unctuous, with a good balance of structure and acidity. In order to get such a Txakoli, we have combined the most traditional and the most innovative production methods to create it. Thanks to the batonnage (stirring of the lees), we have attained the characteristic unctuosity of this Txakoli.

After harvesting and pressing, the must is left to ferment in stainless steel tanks. Traditionally, and until recently, this was done in oak or chestnut barrels, called kupels, in Basque. Fermentation lasts 20–25 days and then the txacolí is left to lie on its lees. The CO2 prevents oxidation and dissolves the sediments and gives the wine its sparkling characteristic. The wines is not racked so it does not lose its sparkle and is clarified by natural sedimentation by gravity in the tank or barrel. Traditionally, the wine is tasted on the feast of San Antonio on 17 January, which is known as Txacolí Day (Txacoli Eguna, in Basque).

Palacio del Burgo Rioja Blanco 2019

Palacio del Burgo Rioja Blanco is made from 100% Viura.

The wine shows a brilliant pale yellow color. The nose is elegant and very fruity, with straw and pineapple notes. The taste is intense, being extremely fruity with fresh balanced acidity.
Palacio del Burgo White Wine has been created to accompany all kinds of meals and be the perfect glass of wine to illuminate those memorable low light encounters. This wine is the product of the winemaker's efforts to highlight the fruit. The structure and mouth feel of the wine compliment and balance the fruit.

Enjoy it with white fish dishes and seafood.

Stunning salmon-pink hues. The nose is intense and fine, dominated by notes of red berries. On the palate, the combination of fine bubbles and delicate aromas produces a delightfully light and silky rosé.

Rubus Proprietary Red Blend Australia 2014

Tasting Notes: Deep, dark ruby color, aromas of blue fruits, confectionery and subtle licorice characters, thick luscious palate with good structure and soft finish.

The Blend is 44% Rubired, 31% Durif and 25% Shiraz.

Rubired is a cross between Tinto Cao and Alicante Ganzin (which is itself a cross between Alicante Bouschet and Aramon Rupestris Ganzin). It is known for being particularly adapted to the hot climate and producing dark wines, as the color is not only coming from the grape's skin, but also from the grape juice itself. It was developed in 1958 by H.P. Olmo of the University of California Davis.

Durif, also known as Petite Sirah, is also a cross of two different grape varietals: Syrah and Peloursin. It was created by French botanist François Durif in 1860 while keeping Syrah and Peloursin plants under the same roof; it happened from a natural process called "cross-pollination." The grape itself is known for its very aromatic, plummy character.

Shiraz, which we all know for being the most recognized grape varietal of Australia, brings some minty, spicy and fruity characteristics to the wines.

Grapes are crushed and destemmed then placed in rotary fermenters where three rotations per day break up the cap and extract color and tannin. Commercial yeast is added for fermentation. The juice is pressed to stainless steel for malolactic fermentation, undergoes oak maturation for 9 months, then is stored in stainless steel.

Pairs well with BBQ lamb with roast vegetables.
