The 2012 Côtes du Rhône is another beauty by this team. Licorice, roasted herbs, pepper and plenty of sweet fruit come together in this medium to full-bodied, layered, and textured effort. Made from 60% Grenache, and Mourvedre and Syrah that saw mostly concrete tank, it’s a smoking Côtes du Rhône (and a fabulous value) to drink over the coming 3-4 years.

This is another impressive lineup from oenolgist Xavier Vignon, who works with the likes of Raymond Usseglio, Le Nerthe, Marcoux and Grand Veneur, to name a few. These are all negociant wines, but they obviously have access to some serious vineyard, and the winemaking is impeccable. Looking at these latest releases, his 2013s buck the vintage stereotype with their ripe, textured profiles, and his 2012s are certainly up with some of the top wines of the vintage as well. In addition, prices remain more than reasonable here. If you haven’t yet discovered these wines, now is a great time. As a side note, I’m halfway through a case of his 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape, with every wine showing brilliantly. These can drink nicely in their youth, yet age beautifully as well. -Wine Advocate 90 Points

Tasting Notes:   Purple and ruby notes. Fine and silky nose with subtle notes of raspberry, liquorice and vanilla. Great structure, flexible and round tannins, pleasant smooth, long finish.


Review:

Possessing slightly more texture and depth than the Gigondas, the 2012 Vacqueyras is another wine from this team that shows it terroir beautifully. Ripe, upfront, medium to full-bodied and voluptuous, it gives up beautiful dark berry fruit, violets, licorice and herbs on the nose. It too should drink beautifully over the coming 7-8 years.

Les Pieds dans les Galets Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2012

Les Pieds dans les Galets Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes is made from 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah.

Fruity : on the red and fresh fruits (strawberries, raspberries, cherries...) - Spicy (pepper) – Intense and rich flavours, as to the nose as to the mouth, on the red fruits. Real beautiful balance and freshness. Excellent tannic structure which provides a wine with a particularly good ageing potential.

Made from 80 years old vines (the oldest vines are 100 years old). 
They are using temperature controlled tanks in order to keep the must at 30°C during fermentation. 
The winemaking process lasts about 20-25 days before starting the Ageing Process in oak kegs.
100% of the wine goes through Malolactic Fermentation.
The wine is bottled without filtration.

Richer, fuller and denser is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is composed of 65% Grenache and the rest equal parts Mourvedre and Syrah. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by abundant notes of black fruits, licorice, lavender, Provencal herbs as well as a meaty richness. -Wine Advocate Robert Parker 91 Points

Xavier Vignon, along with Philippe Cambie, are probably the two most highly renowned oenologists in Chateauneuf du Pape as well as some of the surrounding Cotes du Rhone regions. Vignon’s office and laboratory are next to the Auto Route A7, in the same complex as Chateau Husson. He is the consultant for such well-known domaines as Raymond Usseglio, Jerome Quiot, Beaurenard, La Nerthe, Mont Redon, Marcoux, Grand Veneur and La Gardine. I tasted through the new and upcoming Xavier Vignon releases. The blend of Xavier Vignon’s Chateauneuf du Pape can vary considerably. Vignon told me that it is a selection from nearly 120 different parcels in the appellation. Fashioned from the best fruit from old vines planted in the finest parcels is the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme. Xavier Vignon is not going to release the 2007 Anonyme (his greatest Chateauneuf du Pape to date) until 2013 so readers have a chance of getting some of this production. I tasted three vintages of this cuvee with Vignon.

For the last 15 years, oenologist Xavier Vignon has become internationally known for being the winemaker of several of the best domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and around (La Nerthe, La Vieille Julienne, Beaurenard, La Mordorée, etc.)

 In 2002, some friends (who are wine importers) asked him if he can create his own wine. Choosing amongst the best wines he has made, he creates a blended Rhône with different vintages, and different appellations. As this outstanding « non vintage table wine » meets a big success Xavier adds a complete range of prestigious Appellations, still selecting and buying the best wines of the greatest domaines he knows perfectly.  As Xavier Vignon wishes to keep his main work, which is to manage his laboratory, he associates with two partners in 2007, in order to be able to develop his "Xavier wines".

Review:

The 2011 Vacqueyras is a blend of 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre that was aged in one-third each new, 1-year-old and 2-year-old barrels for 12-18 months. It boasts up-front, decadently aromas of roasted meats and herbs, licorice, chocolate and black fruits that flow to a rounded, supple and richly texture palate. A big, chewy and hedonistic wine, enjoy it over the coming 5-7 years. Drink now-2020. - Wine Advocate 91 Points

Secrets des Princes Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge 2013

This wine was named after the secret cuvee the Princes of Orange were keeping for their private consumption and sharing on special occasions. Long before the appellation Chateauneuf du Pape was created, the princes of Orange were enjoying the fine wines from this area. This wine made from a blend of 90% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah exhibits aromas of ripe black fruits, liquorice with a smooth texture and perfect balance. Ideal with grilled steaks, beef stews and cheeses.

Soil : Clay and siliceous with round pebbles on the surface.

Average age of the vines: 45 years.
Vinification : Total destemming. Cold pre-fermentation maceration during 4 days at 12°C then long maceration during 20 to 25 days with regular punching over and daily release- temperature controlled at 28°C to 30°C . 
Vinified and matured in stainless in order to show the purest expression of the Grenache and the terroir.

Sunset Hills Viognier 2017


Tropical notes of pineapple and apricot on the nose. Crisp lemon lime, pear, and white flower wash over the palate.

The 2016 growing hit a rain right at flowering, diminishing the fruit set of the vines. This may have decreased yield, but on the contrary helps with even and quick ripening. With a hot spell at the end it led to a very fruit forward wine with beautful tropical aromatics. 5 - 15 years old vines.
