Winery: Marco Capra Azienda Agricola

The estate is located in Santo Stefano Belbo, on the Seirole hill between the Langhe and Monferrato districts. The main resource of the area has always been the cultivation of the vine: the particular geological conformation of the soil and its microclimate favor an optimal ripening of the bunches and the acquisition of the typical organoleptic properties.

This is a small family-run company; the art of viniculture is a wealth that the family has handed down for generations. The quality that distinguishes the wine is determined by the control on the entire supply chain from the vine to the bottle, through processes that follow the tradition while promoting the innovation that distinguishes modern companies.

Today the company is managed by Marco Capra who has succeeded in giving the right innovative boost typical of the new generations, while continuing to observe the teachings and experience handed down by his forefathers. The precious consulting skills of the oenologists Dante Scaglione and Daniela Serra is a further guarantee for the production of the very best quality wines.
Date Founded: 1945
Owner: Marco Capra
Winery Philosophy: "Wine is a piece of Art. We make wine as artists create their artworks. We give voice to the grapes, exalting them with our expertise."

Tommaso Capra, known as “Tumasin”, founded the estate in the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo in 1945. Tommaso then handed down his experience and winemaking culture to his son Luciano. Until the end of the 1980s, the primary activity of the estate was the production of high quality wine sold in traditional demijohns to the wholesalers.
In 1999 Marco, Luciano’s grandson, took over the company, giving new energy to the business. Driven by a real passion for wine and an aspiration to renewal and his youthful enthusiasm, Marco has carried on the family tradition and contributed to its growth.
In 2014 Marco Capra decided to change the name “Azienda Agricola Sanmarco” and started using his own name Marco Capra directly onto the label to highlight his personal “touch”. The convincing result is visible in the wines, which fully express the typicity of the territory and have succeeded in gaining the increasing appreciation of both wine experts and wine enthusiasts.
Winery Acreage: 44.5 acres
Winery Production: 5,000 / 9L cases
Varietals Produced: PINOT NOIR, CHARDONNAY, MOSCATO, NASCETTA, DOLCETTO, BARBERA, NEBBIOLO
Winemaker: Marco Capra

Marco Capra was born in 1981 in Asti and has been living in Santo Stefano Belbo since his birth. He started working with his grandfather for a couple of years when he was 18. From 1996 to 1998 he learned to work the land and the vineyards, while in 1999 he started working fulltime at the winery. In 2001 the winery was renovated and in 2014 he personalized the name of the label after his name. He is married to Monica and is a father of two lovely kids of 7 and  - Elisabetta and Riccardo.
Producing high quality wines is Marco Capra’s first goal, and in order to achieve this, his personal commitment and work start in the vineyard: “The vineyards are our most important capital and it is our job to take care of them and work them in the most natural and eco-compatible way possible”. Piedmont is renowned for its typical, richly traditional grape varieties – Nascetta, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato.
The hills that give life to Marco Capra wines are those of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, a wonderful marriage between nature and man’s work recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. From the top of the Seirole hill in Santo Stefano Belbo; Marco enjoys a spectacular view on the vineyards which are perched on the gentle slopes, with the best exposition to the sun’s rays and the breeze from the wind. The terroir is special, very rich and able to give life to the great wines of the Piedmontese heritage.

Marco Capra Azienda Agricola produces mainly Piedmont’s autochthonous wines to enjoy all the characteristics of the terroir. The vineyards were chosen in the areas that are most suited to the cultivation of the single grape varieties. Meticulous care and attention are given to the vines, in the respect of agriculture techniques that allow to keep the yield under control. Defensive treatments are carried out prioritizing products with a low environmental impact.
The beginning of the harvest is decided by observing the degree of ripeness of the grapes, their sugar and acid contents and their development over time on the basis of the atmospheric conditions. The harvest usually starts at the end of August, with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes for sparkling wines, whereas Moscato, Chardonnay and Nascetta grapes are harvested at the beginning of September. Dolcetto and Barbera grapes are harvested between the end of September and the beginning of October followed, in mid October, by Nebbiolo grapes.

The grapes are all harvested by hand, into small perforated crates. All the phonological phases and the work in the vineyard are supervised by the agronomist Angelo Cortese.

The cellar
The wine is born in the vineyard, but man is responsible for trying to best transform the fruit that he receives after months of hard work in the vineyard. The architectural structure and all the technical systems have been designed and built to obtain the transformation of the grapes to the highest possible levels.

The cellar is equipped with all the latest technology, yet it remains faithful to the most traditional vinification processes.

Every step of the winemaking process - from the arrival of the grapes to fermentation, maturation, bottling, aging and shipping - is supervised by Marco Capra who, flanked by the oenologists Daniela Serra and Dante Scaglione, oversees every single phase in order to achieve the best final result.

Fefinanes Albarino de 1583 Albarino 2021

Fefinanes Albarino de 1583 Albarino is made from 100% Albarino.
Aged for 5 months in oak barrels (a combination of fine-grained American and French Allier barrels).
1583 is the birth date of the Viscount of Fefinanes, Gonzalo Sarmiento Valladares, builder of the Castle of Fefinanes, in Cambados.

They wanted to pay tribute to their ancestor with this wine that managed to reach a perfect harmony between the fruitiness of the Albarino grape and the complexity brought by the oak aging.

Lovely straw yellow color, clean and bright. The nose is reminiscent of ripe crystallized fruit and spices. The palate is elegant, round and well balanced, with a silky texture.

Excellent with shellfish, grilled or stewed fish, white meats, poultry.

Fefinanes Albarino de Albarino 2021

Fefinanes Albarino de Albarino is 100 percent Albarino

Fresh fruit aromas of apricot and peach slices with notes of lemon and green apple. Pretty notes of honey and wet nutmeg, and the mouth is round, clean, and pleasant with baked apple, honey, and lemon.

This is a classic Albariño which is good young, but actually improves over two to three years and remains quite drinkable for up to five years. Owner Juan Gil comments that the wine really starts to come into its own in June/July, and he actually prefers it 18 or more months after it's made. A Fefiñanes "vertical" of three or four vintages can provide some most interesting surprises.

Review:

"One of those textbook Albariños that delivers the goods, year in, year out, this is a very pure expression of the grape, with no lees ageing at all. Sourced from vineyards in the Cambados sub-region, all on decomposed granite soils, it has lovely pear and lime zest flavours and engaging focus, minerality and stony freshness. Hard to beat at the price. 2022-26"

Arzuaga Ladera del Norte Ribera del Duero 2020

Arzuaga Ladera del Norte Ribera del Duero is made from 100% Tempranillo.

The grapes come from organic crops and are harvested from the "Valdesardon" farm, owned by the Arzuaga Navarro family, which is the westernmost vineyard of the Ribera del Duero DO, located at an altitude of 800 meters in the village of Olivares de Duero. Clay-limestone soil on a hillside that will mark the characteristics of the wine.

The wine is of medium high intensity in color, a clear and bright cherry with purple flashes. An array of red fruits such as raspberry and cherry predominates with a high aromatic intensity, combining with balsamic tones, coffee and roasted notes coming from the aging in oak barrels without being overwhelming. This is a fresh and elegant wine, with an easy and balanced entry into the mouth followed by juicy and chewy sensations. Slightly sweet and toasted notes, and a pleasant and balanced aftertaste that is reminiscent of the fruity aromas on the nose.

Ideal companion for red meat, white meat, game and game, roasted or in sauce. Blue fish and soft cheeses.

Review:

"Intense cherry color. Aromas of dried herbs, creamy oak, black fruits and lactic notes. In the mouth, ripe fruits, spices, fine tannins, full-bodied."

Cabrieres Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Les Silex 2019

Cabrieres Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Les Silex  is made from 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah .

The vineyard is situated on the high tablelands, which are characteristic of the northern area of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The terrain consists mainly of alpine diluvium and chalky Miocenian soil, with large flint pebbles covering the surface. These pebbles conserve the heat of the day during the night, thus avoiding too much evaporation.

This 2016 has opened up and is drinking great right now. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Elegant cherry red color, with expressive notes of red fruits (strawberry and raspberry). Mellow tannins, well-balanced on the palate. I feel I need to point out the freshness, it is bright and lively on the palate, something we don’t see a lot of in this region. This also makes it extremely food friendly as it can hold up to fatty proteins.

Very good with white meat, red meat, charcuterie and cheese.

Review:

"Shimmering ruby-red. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes spice-accented red fruit liqueur, potpourri and garrigue, and a smoky mineral nuance builds in the glass. Appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry cola and lavender flavors smoothly blend richness and energy. The spice and mineral notes drive an impressively long, focused finish framed by supple, well-knit tannins. - Josh Raynolds"

Lodovico Barolo Cannubi 2017

Lodovico Barolo Cannubi is made from 100% Nebbiolo.

With a ruby-red color, the Barolo Cannubi has a rich bouquet which gradually recalls the scents of roses flowers, truffles and wood spice. The palate is at first elegant and refined, then is begins to gain in complexity with a little breathing or decanting.

Grapes provenance: Cannubi Boschis vineyard in the village of Barolo
Soil: composed mainly of large clayey limestone marls and sands
Vineyards: South-est facing with Guyot pruning (6-8 buds / vine)
N° Vines / hectare: 5000
Yield / hectare: 50-55 q / Ha
Plant year: 1970

Average height: 250-260 mt

Nebbiolo is a native black grape variety of Piedmont that gives birth also Barolo and Barbaresco. The name ‘Nebbiolo’ derives from the word ‘fog’ and there could be two reasons. The first hypothesis traces the name of Nebbiolo back to the obscured, almost clouded appearance of the grape, covered with abundant bloom. The second hypothesis, more suggestive, is linked to the very late ripening of the grapes: the Nebbiolo grape harvest often takes place in late October, when the vineyards are enveloped in morning mists.

Pairs with aged cheeses, red meat, rich/earthy dishes, truffle risotto, pasta with sausages and mushrooms. Braised or roasted meats.

Trouillard Cuvee du Fondateur 2012

Its sparkling gold color is vivid and bright. The aromas are floral and honeyed with a wisp of vanilla. The palate is elegantly full with ripe white peach flavors and toasty overtones but balanced with a lively freshness, and delicacy on the long finish.

A beautiful tribute to the top champagne produced at the Maison Trouillard and a decadent partner to foie gras!

Montebuena Blanco 2021

Montebuena Blanco is made from 80% Viura and 20% Tempranillo Blanco.

What truly sets Montebuena apart is its unique position where the Ebro river is closest to the Sierra Cantabria mountains, creating a blend of Mediterranean and Continental climates that prevents an excess of rain and extreme cold. In addition, the shallow, calcareous soil limits the yield of the harvest and the size of the grapes while increasing the volume of the skins, resulting in deeper color and a greater concentration of flavor.

Montebuena Blanco is straw yellow colored, translucent with greyish hues at the edges. Dominant white fruit aromas of apple and ripe banana on the nose with citrus notes in the background. Fresh and intense on the palate, although the acidity gradually smoothes out as the wine passes through the mouth and gives way to sweetness combined with a slightly bitter note and silky feel that balances the first sensation.

Fresh salads and vegetables, grilled fish, young cheeses, seafood and shellfish.

Corne Loup Tavel Rose 2021

Corne Loup Tavel Rose is made from  60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 15% mix of Mourvèdre, Clairette & Carignan

Elegant, refreshing, food-friendly and versatile, this Tavel offers mouth-watering aromas of strawberry and berry pie.

Corne Loup Tavel represents the pinnacle of the rose pyramid quality wise that can be achieved in the Southern Rhone. The town of Tavel has been famous for its rose wine since the time of the Popes in Avignon (1300's). Tavel is about 2,300 acres in size and produces about 500,000 cases yearly of 9 liter cases, plus can age for 2-3 years, unlike many other roses. Produced from a blend of  Grenache, Cinsualt, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan, the wine comes from a famous sub-parcel called the Plateau de Vallongue between Tavel and Lirac AOC's.

The 20 hectare-vineyards are located in the hamlets of Oliver, Campet, Vestides and Vallongue. The Tavel from this producer is a blend of all 3 soils types you can find in the AOC:

  • Vestides is located West of the village of Tavel. The terroir is made of flat white stones.
  • Vallongue is located Northeast of the Village of Tavel. The terroir is similar to Chateauneuf du Pape, with a lot of pebble stones. (Galets Roules).
  • Olivet is located South-East of the village of Tavel. The terroir is made of sandy soils and some stones.

Dry and lively, it is an ideal wine for barbecues as it makes a wonderful sipper that's also capable of matching with a wide variety of summer foods, including grilled chicken, seafood and summer salads
