The Maringer-Reif Estate

Maringer-Reif, of the village of Piesport, produces some of Germany’s finest Rieslings.  Celler Master Jorg Matheus, Geisenhim graduate, part of a 400 year family history of producing wines, assures the exceptional quality of every bottle, every glass.

Wines are produced using slow fermentation methods, stainless steel tanks, from grapes hand picked from low yield vineyards.  All grapes are grown in Devonian slate.

This region of the Middle Mosel has been a center of wine production since early Roman times.  The famous Piesporter vineyards, Goldtropfchen, Treppchen, Michelsberg along with Dhroner Hofberger and Wintricher Ohligsberg produce wines of breathtaking complexity.

Maringer-Reif was established in 1990, bought by the Matheus family in 2009.

Fruit: 100% Riesling Appellation: Traben Trarbach, Germany Vineyard: The fruit for this wine comes from our sustainably farmed vineyards covered in blue and brown slate and quartz. The Ungsberg is known for the extreme pitch of the slopes high above the Mosel River. This wine comes exclusively from old vines (40-60 years old) and from a single vineyard. Vines have been grown on this spot since the 16th Century.

The fruit for this wine is deep, rich and intense, produced only from the best and oldest vines in this vineyard (40-60 years old). It is carefully hand picked later in the season to allow for ideal ripeness. All fruit is painstakingly hand sorted to allow only the best grapes to be crushed for the Single Cru. The juice is fermented by natural occurring yeast only- no added cultures- slowly at cold temperatures until the perfect balance of acidity and fruit is reached. The wine was aged sur lies for 10 months, then aged 100% German in oak barrels.

Review:

From 75-year-old vines in a site adjacent to the estate’s share of Schlossberg that faces west into the village of Trarbach and away from the Mosel, this bottling finished much drier than the estate’s other 2014s, but at 11 percent alcohol it still evinces a nice sense of levity. Clearer and brighter than the corresponding Schlossberg, its influences of malo and old barrique are in no way problematic, although along with lees influence they make for a subtle impression of creaminess. Apple, white peach and lime deliver generous, tangy juiciness, while stoniness and salinity add interest and saliva-inducement on the persistent finish. Vinous 90 Points

Richard Bocking Alte Reben Ungsberg Riesling 2014

Richard Bocking Alte Reben Ungsberg is made 100 % Riesling

This riesling is made from grapes coming from a single-vineyard in the Ungsberg part of the Trarbach's vineyards. It is located in prime location along the Mosel River, and the vines are older as well, producing not only little quantity, but also higher quality. Here the soils is not blue slate, but rather grey slate. This gives the wine an interesting balance with an elegant structure and a wonderful mouthfeel.

Ripe aromas of pineapple, lemon and peach.

Reviews:

This legally dry bottling from 40-year-old vines on a steep site along the Kautenbach side valley delivers abundant juiciness of tangy grapefruit and lime, mingling on a firm palate with saliva-inducing mineral salts, piquant citrus seed and invigoratingly pungent green herbs. The gripping, animated finish suggests a mouthwatering infusion of oyster liquor. - Vinous 90 Points

"Rinaldi made a 2011 "Bug Juice" Pink from 90% Moscato d’Asti and 10% Brachetto d’Acqui. This is an addictive, light pink-colored, frothy rose that is quite low in alcohol, with deliciously sweet strawberry and cherry notes intermixed with hints of peach and apricot. Just stunning, there is much less of it available (800 cases). I can imagine that if you’re sitting by the pool on a hot summer day, this wine would be the perfect accompaniment."

Pago de los Capellanes Crianza 2015

Prepared with Tempranillo grapes (100%), this wine has a very bright, intense maraschino cherry colour that fades to a Cardinal red rim.

It has a very marked aroma with a good balance of fruit and wood, where tones of vanilla intermingle with well-ripened fruit, black berries and wild fruits. There are also noticeable hints of leather and liquorice, resulting from the mingling of the French oak and the aromas inherent in this variety of grape.

In the mouth, the wine has a smooth texture but fills the palate with balanced flavours, including fine tannins, which help extend the life of the wine. The finish and aftertaste are both long and elegant.

Vineyard:

Pago de los Capellanes, Pedrosa de Duero.

Variety composition:

100% Tempranillo.

Type of soil:

Clayey and chalky.

Aging:

12 months in barrel and remainder on rack.

Type of oak:

100% French oak, medium toast.

Serving:

Uncork and decant one hour before serving at a temperature of 16-18 ºC.

Selected harvest with yields limited to 5000 kg per hectare. The harvest begins in early October, starting with the most mature parcels. Once the grapes are brought into the winery, the tanks are seeded with indigenous yeast (start culture) and the alcoholic fermentation begins. During the barrelling period, which lasts 30 days, the wine is crushed and pumped over daily, all the while controlling the density, temperature and evolution of the yeast. At the end of this fermentation, the tanks are emptied and the wine taken for malolactic fermentation.

The malolactic fermentation begins without the addition of bacteria. The temperature is held steady at 20ºC for period of 22 days, during which we monitor the levels of malic and lactic acids. When the malic acid content is less than 0.1 grams per litre, the wine is decanted to separate the lees and is transferred directly to the barrels without undergoing any type of filtration, clarification or cold treatment.

The wine is aged for twelve months in new and semi-new French oak barrels (no more than three years old). At the end of this period, it is taken to the tank for homogenisation, where it undergoes light filtration through cartridges (open pore) and is then bottled.
